The royal fathers constituting the Traditional Rulers Council in Ikot Ekpene have unanimously elected His Royal Highness Obong Okon Udo Ukut as the new Paramount Ruler and the President of Ikot Ekpene Traditional Rulers Council.
The election which was conducted by Hon. Udo Ekpenyong, the commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs took place at Traditional Rulers chambers, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uyo.
Obong Okon Ukut was earlier today nominated for the position by Chief Pius Udofa, the Village Head of Ikot Udo Usung, and seconded by Obong Alban Udofia before the election proper where all the four members of the Traditional Rulers Council who were present during the election cued behind him and elected him for the position.
In his speech, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs said the election was in consonant with the provision of the law as captured in the Year 2000 Traditional Rulers Law of Akwa Ibom State.
Hon. Ekpenyong noted that before the exercise, he had an interface with the members of Ikot EkpeneTraditional Rulers Council through official letters addressed to each of them in accordance with the procedure of the law.
The Hon. Commissioner used the opportunity to advise the new Paramount to perform his duty meticulously and utilise his new office to dispense justice to the people of Ikot Ekpene.
Responding, Obong Okon Ukut Who was visibly elated for his current promotion pledged to use his new office and sustain the existing peace in Ikot Ekpene and expressed his appreciation to the members of Ikot Ekpene Traditional Rulers Council for finding him worthy to be entrusted with the new mandate.
Obong Okon Ukut was until his recent promotion the Clan Head of Amayam Clan in Ikot Ekpene.
